Week 4

Photo exercise
‘Scanner art” self portrait

Using a scanner, create a composition incorporating yourself and several selected objects. The scanned composition is a self portrait, however experimentation should be conducted with both cluttered and minimal compositions as well as interesting objects and body.

You will need at least three final scans.

Scan your compositions in at 300 DPI and save onto the desktop of the computer as a TIFF.

Title your scans scn1, scn2, scn3 followed by your initials.

Photo exercise
Take a photo of yourself

Taking a photo of yourself could have many different interpretations. Be creative and think of every possibility before taking your photos.

With a camera go out and capture yourself. Use composition rules you have learnt so far to compose your photos. Don't be afraid to get in close and use different camera angles

Take at least 15 shots, choose the best three and optimise them in Photoshop.

Some ideas you could explore

E.g. different backgrounds, using the timer on your camera, reflections, shadows, angles, body parts or even an aspect of yourself or your life.

Repeat the photo exercise out of TAFE class time.

Reasearch Item
Copy right and taking photos in public.

Complete the reading and answer the following questions.

'for any society to function in a relatively free and open manner, there could not realistically be a requirement for all photographs to be taken with consent. If there were such restrictions, candid shots could never be taken, and the media would be severely constrained in the images they show us. Freedom of expression and artistic expression would undoubtedly be adversely affected ... while there may be legitimate circumstances when recording images should be restricted, it would not be practical or desirable to obtain consent from every person all of the time, for example, for use in television news file footage'.
